The dictionary lists the definition as:

Inflected forms: pl. hyp?no?ses (-se?z)
1. An artificially induced altered state of consciousness, characterized
by heightened suggestibility and receptivity to direction. 2. Hypnotism.
3. A sleeplike condition.
Not a whole lot if that is your only description. What hypnosis
really is when you come to the core of it is Effective Communication.
Since everyone has been in and can go into a hypnotic state easily
it becomes a matter utilizing the state for productive purposes.
This is where knowledge and skill comes into effect.
No, a hypnotized person
does not give up control, quite the contrary. A hypnotized person
actually has greater control, experiencing a heightened state of
consciousness. Most people enjoy the hypnotic state so much that
they asked to be hypnotized regardless of changes they want to make.
It feels like being in a state of deep, deep relaxation. You know
the feeling when you take a deep breath in and just allow yourself
to sink into your chair as you let all of your cares and tension
just slide away. Well it's like that except that we communicate
with your unconscious to allow for positive change to take place.
Well, it's very complicated. You come in, sit down and I talk to
you. Very complicated. Alright there is a little more to it than
that but for the purpose of explanation this is really what it's
all about. The key in the process is the communication that takes
place.
There are a number of decent books out there that describe the process
of self Hypnosis. Or just email me and I will give a brief description
of how to do it
Hypnosis is often referred to in the stage hypnotist sense. (Picture
the guy who makes someone think they are a chicken). The term hypnotherapy
came about to differentiate those that use hypnosis for performance
reasons and those that use it to help assist people make internal
positive changes (picture a one on one private session).
Hypnotherapy is brief and effective therapy designed to get you the
changes you want in the shortest amount of time. Cognitive therapy
often takes a significant amount of time (years) and money ($150-200 a
session) without any significant sign of results.
